Sputnik

Sputnik was the first man-made satellite sent from Earth into space. It was launched by the Soviet Union, triggering the Space Race between the Soviet Union. Americans could hear the beeps of the Sputnik from their radios, and this worried them about any possible nuclear strikes the Soviet Union could launch from space.
