Mussolini's Resignation and its effects
After Mussolini resigned, the allies rethought their strategies and decided to invade the Italian peninsula. This decision disappointed the Americans who had previously intended to attack France. German soldiers began fighting in northern Italy due to the announcement of Mussolini's dismissal. The Italians signed a secret armistice with the allies, leaving everyone against the Germans. The Italian attack strategy was relevant to the trench fighting from WWI, which seemed really successful. This led to the destruction of the Gustav line, the strongest German line of defense and the Battle of Cassino.

With Mussolini resigning, it allowed the Allies and them to all be on one side (as you said). It also is what allowed the Germans to move in on the country and take it over, which is what lead the Allies to action in invading Sicily. Now up against the Germans, the Allies were stopped cold due to the German lines in the the mountains going through the center of Italy. Even though Mussolini's resignation made way for the Germans to invade Italy, it also allowed for the Allies to form their other counter-attack, and eventually, they were able to break through, obtaining the rest of Italy.
