America's Backyard

Despite Guatemala not being apart of the United States of America, they still like to keep a close watch on them. Politicians these days and in the 60's were mainly funded by big corporations to allow them to take what they want. One of the biggest companies, the Unites Fruit Company owned a lot of land in Guatemala. Well, more than three-hundred thousand acres of land, ports, railroads and even the Telegraph/Telephone company. When President Arbenz takes office, a democratically elected president, the USA decides it needs to intervene. President Arbenz wanted to nationalize the land of Guatemala and give it to the people. This would cause USA companies to lose a lot of money and possibly run out of business.  The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are deployed into Guatemala to overthrow the leadership. Do you believe what the CIA did was justified?

  1. I don't think the CIA was justified to involve themselves in Guatemalan affairs. If the people of Guatemala were upset with the government ideals the US would have a right to do so, but it seems as if the US involved themselves in Guatemalan affairs not for the people of Guatemala, but for the benefit of themselves.

  2. The actions of the CIA were in no way shape or form justified, the government can do what it wants, and if that means kicking american companies off of its land then so be it, its their land for crying out loud.

  3. I agree with the comments above. I don't think that the US should have involved themselves in overthrowing Guatemala's leadership because they have a right to do what they want on their own land. The US definitely involved themselves for personal benefit rather than the benefit of the Guatemalans, instead of just letting the country do what it wanted.

  4. I think the CIA should not have involved themselves in Guatemalan affairs. It seems as if they involved themselves for their own personal, selfish reasons rather than an attempt to make Guatemala a better place to be in.
