Why Gorbachev was so ideal in the end of the Cold War
I believe Gorbachev helped end the Cold War. One way he did this was by easing the tensions between the US and USSR. Before Gorbachev, none of the Soviet leaders and US presidents ever got along, and when they did, it was for a very brief moment in time. But once Gorbachev got elected, he actually communicated with the US presidents to ease tension. This was ideal because it got them talking which is so important in finding an agreement. Gorbachev was also open to changing the idea of communism. When Stalin was leader, he had very strict rules on what communism was, and it was very ineffective once he died. Gorbachev knew that communism in the USSR was not working and so he created economic reforms included glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost was an idea of openness that allowed the Soviet people to finally speak their minds, while Perestroika was an idea of economic restructuring. Both of these led to a strong USSR and made the people happier. Do you think the outcome of the Cold War would be the same without the election of Gorbachev? And do you think he made the USSR better?

Gorbachev was a key to the end of the Cold War. I believe that the outcome of the cold war would have been very different if Gorbachev wasn't elected. He knew that he needed to reach out to the United States actually cooperated with them. I also believe that he tried to make the USSR better by his policies such as glasnost. However he tried to keep the USSR communist but with capitalistic ideas and in the end it didn't work.
ReplyDeleteSince Gorbachev was elected, he was able to put an end to a majority of the tensions created throughout the beginning of the Cold War and the end of WWII. I believe he had good ideas to make Russia an overall better nation, but ultimately, his plan to have a mix of communist ideas and capitalism didn't work. The outcome of the Cold War may have been different if he was not elected because he wanted to keep peace between the USSR and the US, whereas the other Soviet leaders didn't.
ReplyDeleteThey Cold War would not have ended when and how it did if Gorbachev had not taken office. Of the previous leaders, Gorbachev really seemed to be the only one that wanted to end the Cold War. The others really only wanted to win. Depending on how you look at it, Gorbachev made the USSR more capitalistic allowing for wester culture to come and also giving more freedom to the people with glasnost ultimately causing the USSR to collapse.
